Good Health Is Bad for Business

When Consumers Don't Sneeze, K-C and Other Tissue, Medicine Manufacturers Catch Cold (Sales)

BATAVIA, Ohio (AdAge.com) -- After years of media worry over the threat of avian flu or some other long-overdue flu pandemic, a few marketers are facing a difficult reality: This isn't shaping up to be the year of the big bug or even of many little ones.
Nationwide, sales of facial tissues were down 5.2% in the fourth quarter from a year ago, and cold remedies took a bigger hit.
Nationwide, sales of facial tissues were down 5.2% in the fourth quarter from a year ago, and cold remedies took a bigger hit.

Flu shots are up this year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and perhaps as a result, cases of the flu are down. So, too, are colds. And when fewer people catch colds, marketers of facial tissue and cold remedies -- and the retailers who sell them -- get a chill.

Cold and flu symptoms were down 9% in the fourth quarter from a year ago in data tracked by Kimberly-Clark Corp., maker of Kleenex. The brand was a relative soft spot in a quarter of otherwise strong top-line growth for K-C, which saw organic sales rise 6%.

Less prescriptions
CVS/Caremark, the nation's biggest drugstore retailer, blamed the light cold and flu season in part for weak December comparable-store sales growth of 1.8%. Walgreens also blamed fewer flu cases for reducing the number of prescriptions filled by 2.6% in December over a year ago, though overall same-store sales were still ahead of its rival, at 3.3%.

"Unfortunately, people have not been getting sick at a rate we would all like yet," P&G Chairman-CEO A.G. Lafley joked on the company's Jan. 31 conference call with analysts.

"The flu season was the weakest it's been in nine years," said Thomas Ryan, chairman-CEO of CVS at a JPMorgan investor conference Jan. 7. "It has an impact on front-store sales and obviously pharmacy sales." He did note that both he and JPMorgan analyst Lisa Gill were coming down with colds, "so I think it's on its way."

But on a Jan. 24 conference call, K-C Chairman-CEO Tom Falk wasn't so sure, noting that the lower incidence of cold and flu had continued into the new year.

Healthier consumers
That leaves marketers in the sticky position of bemoaning the effect of fewer people getting sick without rooting for disease. "We are never happy when our volumes go down," Mr. Falk said. But he added: "I guess the good news for our consumers is they were generally healthier in the fourth quarter, and there [weren't] any big flu pandemics floating around."

He said K-C hasn't seen a clear trend indicating whether this year's vaccination rate is a one-off or will keep climbing.

A K-C spokesman did note a radio report that Dallas, where the company is headquartered, has had a recent spike in flu cases. Unfortunately for K-C, Texas is one of only five states, also including New York and New Jersey, where the CDC listed the flu as "widespread" the week ending Jan. 19.
Nationwide, sales of facial tissues were down 5.2% in the fourth quarter from a year ago, and cold remedies took a bigger hit. Sales of cold/allergy/sinus medications were off 5.4%, cough syrup down 16.4% and sore-throat remedies down 13.1%, according to Information Resources Inc. data reported by Deutsche Bank.

The problem may not just be fewer people getting sick. Walgreens in a December sales report also cited the impact of a Food and Drug Administration recommendation in September that cough and cold remedies never be administered to infants or toddlers and that antihistamines not be given to children under 6.

The rub
The one cough-cold category that's booming may be a beneficiary of the shift away from children's products. Sales in the relatively tiny chest-rubs category rose 21.1% in the fourth quarter to $22.9 million, while still down 13% for the full year. A spokesman for Procter & Gamble Co. said it's "our hypothesis" that Vicks Vaporub is benefiting from parents who've switched their kids from other products.

For its part, K-C may not entirely be helping category sales, either. Kleenex Anti-Viral tissues, designed to kill 99.9% of cold and flu viruses and thus prevent the spread of illness, launched in 2004. To the extent they're working, they're drying up the market.

"I'm not sure whether we can take credit," the spokesman said.

But the brand is still working hard to give people fewer reasons to blow their noses. On the back cover of the February issue of Prevention magazine, it's trying a new tack, a "French zipper gate" ad designed to look like a box of Kleenex Anti-Viral tissues. It opens to reveal tips on how to avoid spreading germs and a 40¢ coupon.

Vaccines & Infant Death (SBS): Pediatrician Speaks Out on NVIC's The Doctor's Corner

by Barbara Loe Fisher

The Doctor's Corner, sponsored by the National Vaccine Information Center, is a new internet forum at www.NVIC.org for pediatricians to publish referenced articles and analyses evaluating vaccine risks. Today, F. Edward Yazbak, M.D., FAAP, has published an analysis, "Multiple Vaccinations and Shaken Baby Syndrome," that reviews the relationship between administration of multiple vaccines to infants who develop serious adverse events or die and parents being subsequently charged with "Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS).

Dr. Yazbak provides a review of death reports of infants 6 months of age or younger to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). He describes individual case histories and the history of vaccine deaths, which are misdiagnosed as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and discusses vaccine deaths which may be misdiagnosed as Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS).

When an infant dies after vaccination, pediatricians are often reluctant to consider the possibility that the vaccine(s) recently given to keep the child well have killed the child. In our 1985 book, DPT: A Shot in the Dark, Harris Coulter and I described the misdiagnosis of infant deaths, which have occurred within 24 to 72 hours after DPT vaccination, as SIDS. The fact that coroners often misdiagnose vaccine deaths as SIDS is further evidenced by compensation awards made in the U.S. Court of Claims to parents, whose babies died within hours of DPT vaccination, but the coroner initially diagnosed the death as "SIDS."

Dr. Yazbak's article about the misdiagnosis of vaccine deaths and injuries as "Shaken Baby Syndrome" and the subsequent persecution and imprisonment of innocent parents is an important one.

We are all obviously unanimous in our condemnation of any form of child abuse and our conviction that any abuser should be punished to the full extent of the law.

It is well known that vaccines can cause brain inflammation and catastrophic brain damage in some children. Until all of the biological mechanisms for vaccine injury and death are fully understood and described in the scientific literature, parents should be given the benefit of the doubt when babies die after vaccination.

The Doctor's Corner is a public service of the National Vaccine Information Center which provides a place for enlightened pediatricians to discuss how and why vaccines cause reactions, injuries and death; why some children may be at higher risk than others for suffering a vaccine reaction; and how vaccine risks can be reduced.

Pediatricians will also examine the relationship between infectious disease, vaccination and how early childhood experiences with both can influence immune function.

The National Vaccine Information Center has long supported the forging of a more enlightened partnership between pediatricians and parents when it comes to making vaccination decisions for children. Parents in the 21st century are becoming educated about vaccination and want something more from pediatricians than inflexible administration of one-size- fits-all vaccine policies that fail to respect bio-diversity or the informed consent ethic.

NVIC's The Doctor's Corner is a place for intelligent, open-minded, compassionate and courageous pediatricians to demonstrate that they understand and are prepared to respond in a different way to parental concerns about vaccination.

Black Death Was Selective -- Vaccines = Weaker Immune System

Another reason in history showing that you don't want to be vaccinated as it weakens your immune system.

While the deadliest known epidemic in history was pretty dangerous to everyone around, it turns out the Black Death did not kill indiscriminately, as popular wisdom holds. Instead it targeted people who were weak to begin with.

Until now, many researchers believed everyone was at equal risk for the plague that wiped out an estimated 75 million people between 1347 and 1351.

"The fact that it killed so many people is why people assumed it killed indiscriminately," said Sharon DeWitte, a biological anthropologist at the University at Albany who made the discovery. "But actually it killed selectively. Even with diseases as horribly devastating as the Black Death, even then there are differences in individuals' risk."

Black Death cemetery

DeWitte and James Wood of Pennsylvania State University studied 490 skeletons from the East Smithfield Black Death cemetery in London, which was dug specifically for plague victims. The cemetery was excavated in the 1980s, and the skeletons were cleaned and stored for research. DeWitte and Wood recently went to London to examine the bones for lesions — holes, defects or malformations that indicate general frailty.

For a control, they compared the Black Death skeletons to samples from other cemeteries in which people were buried before the plague. The scientists estimated the victims' ages when they died, and used computer models to calculate the link between bone lesions and risk of death.

In both populations, DeWitte found a correlation. As she expected, the link between frailty and risk of death was stronger in non-plague victims, because in general, unhealthy people are more likely to die than well people. However, she also found a connection between frailty and death in the Black Death skeletons, meaning that people who were unwell before they caught the plague were more likely to die of the disease than healthy people.

The researchers assume infirm people succumbed more often because poor nutrition compromised their immune systems' ability to fight the disease.

"It makes sense that the Black Death would kill people who are already weak," DeWitte told LiveScience. "What's important is that we've provided quantitative evidence to counter the assumption that it killed indiscriminately."

The findings were published in the Jan. 28 issue of the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A perfect sample

When the Black Death swept through Europe it wiped out nearly one-third of the European population, according to published reports.

DeWitte said the new finding is particularly important because it eliminates the possibility that victims of the plague represent an unbiased sample of the fourteenth-century population, which researchers wanted to use to study general population trends.

"Some hoped that the cemeteries represented a perfect sample," DeWitte said. "That's out the window. It demonstrates that we should never expect any cemetery to provide an unbiased sample of past populations," In the Black Death cemetery, as in most cemeteries, those in poor health are over-represented.

DeWitte said the finding could help scientists prepare for future epidemics.

"This is relevant because there are a lot of diseases that are emerging and becoming much more prevalent," she said. "The fear is that these will be massive killers and everyone will be at equal risk. Being aware that there will be some people at higher risk means we can take measures to reduce their risk."

Mercury Study Released Early to Help AAP Bash ABC

Mercury Study Released Early to Help AAP Bash ABC

by Barbara Loe Fisher

The AAP leadership is just not going to give up insisting that it is a very, very good thing to inject mercury into infants and children. They are going to twist themselves into pretzels trying to defend the indefensible premise that a known neurotoxin belongs in childhood vaccines, as evidenced by today's early release of a methodologically questionable "study" by Michael Pichichero, M.D. purporting to exonerate the mercury-based vaccine preservative, thimerosal, from any responsibility for children developing vaccine- associated autism. http://www.pharmali ve.com/News/index.cfm? articleid=510116&categoryid=40

The study, originally scheduled to be published Feb. 4 in the AAP journal, Pediatrics, was released "early" in an effort to blunt the impact of tonight's broadcast of a fictional drama on ABC-TV that highlights the ordeal of a family whose son developed autism after receiving mercury-containing vaccines. http://www.forbe s.com/forbeslife/health/feeds/hscout/2008/01/30/hsco ut612206.html

Here is what all the fuss is about (for today at least): Pichichero claims his study of about 200 babies and children, who were injected with vaccines containing ethyl mercury (thimerosal), showed that measurable mercury levels in the blood of the children were gone within 3.7 days. This, says Pichichero, is much quicker than the average 44 days it takes for methyl mercury (found in fish) to be undetectable in the blood. Ergo, he says, exposure to thimerosal does not cause brain damage or autism!

Not so fast, says Thomsas Brubacher, M.D., a scientist who studies the biological effects of ethyl mercury on primates. "Just because it came out of the blood doesn't mean it is excreted from the body. It could have gone to the brain. In primates, you actually get more mercury in the brain after exposure to ethyl mercury than with methyl mercury - it has an easier time crossing the blood brain barrier." http://www.webmd.com/brain/autism/news/2008 0130/vaccine-mercury-leaves-blood-fast

Now, whether you think that all or part of the autism epidemic has been caused by children getting too many mercury containing vaccines or whether you think that a subset of children suffering with autism have been affected by mercury containing vaccines or you believe mercury containing vaccines do not play any role at all in the autism epidemic:

MERCURY IN ANY FORM DOES NOT BELONG IN VACCINES OR ANY OTHER PRODUCT CONSUMED BY HUMANS.

News Flash for the AAP and pediatricians everywhere: there is no mother on this planet who would, willingly, ask you to inject her baby with mercury. It does not matter if ethyl mercury has been "proven" or "not proven" to be the cause of the autism epidemic. It is simple from a parent's perspective:

WHEN IN DOUBT, TAKE IT OUT.

The AAP leadership and doctors inside and outside of government, who have become apologists for unsafe vaccines and one-size-fits-all vaccine policies, are dancing like clowns as they threaten freedom of the press and attempt to cover-up vaccine injuries and deaths not only potentially caused by thimerosal - but also potentially caused by many other biological mechanisms involved in vaccine induced brain and immune system dysfunction, including autism. The dance would be almost comical if their stubborn defense of mercury in vaccines did not reveal so much more about a cavalier disregard for scientific truth and human life.

Burbacher's studies of ethyl mercury and thimerosal in primates are cited by both sides of the thimerosal debate. Mercury in Childhood Vaccines Excreted Quickly

Forbes (HealthDay News)
January 30, 2008

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 30 (HealthDay News) -- The latest chapter in the debate over whether childhood vaccines can cause autism was written Wednesday with release of a study that showed the controversial mercury-containing preservative thimerosal is rapidly excreted from babies' bodies and can't build up to toxic levels.

"Thimerosal has been used for decades, but the surge in vaccinations caused fear that possible accumulations of ethyl mercury, the kind in thimerosal, might exceed safe levels -- at least, when based on the stringent risk guidelines applied to its better- understood chemical cousin, methyl mercury, which is associated with eating fish," lead researcher Dr. Michael Pichichero, professor of microbiology/immunology, pediatrics and medicine at the University of Rochester, said in a prepared statement.

"One of the unanswered questions when this first popped up as a controversy was, when you got thimerosal as an injection, how long would it stay in your blood," co-author Dr. John Treanor, a professor of medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, said in an interview.

The new research, he added, showed that "the levels of thimerosal don't go very high and they go down right away. By the time it's time for the next dose of vaccine, the levels are right back to where they were at the beginning."

For their study, Pichichero's team tracked 216 infants from R. Gutierrez Children's Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where thimerosal is still routinely used in vaccines. Use of thimerosal in childhood vaccines was discontinued in the United States after a joint decision in 1999 by U.S. health officials, pediatricians and vaccine manufacturers.

The infants in the study were put into three age groups and their blood-mercury levels were tested both before and after vaccinations were given to newborns, and at their two- and six-month checkups.

Pichichero's group found that for all three age groups, the half-life of ethyl mercury in the blood -- the time it takes for the body to get rid of half the mercury, and then another half, and so on -- was 3.7 days.

That's significantly less than the half-life of methyl mercury, the kind found in fish, at 44 days.

"Until recently, that longer half-life was assumed to be the rule for both types of mercury. Now it's obvious that ethyl mercury's short half-life prevents toxic build-up from occurring. It's just gone too fast," Pichichero said.

"If you thought thimerosal was responsible for autism, you would be looking at mercury levels that were far below anything anyone's previously thought as being toxic," Treanor added.

"Though it's reassuring to affirm that these immunizations have always been safe, our findings really have greater implications for world health," Pichichero said. "Replacing the thimerosal in vaccines globally would put these vaccines beyond what the world community could afford for its children." "

The study findings were to be released Monday in the February issue of the journal Pediatrics. But they were released early by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which is requesting that the ABC network cancel the premiere episode of a new show Thursday dealing with the thimerosal-autism controversy. The new findings also follow a recent report from the California Department of Health that rates of autism continue to climb there even after thimerosal was removed from childhood vaccines.

And they follow a series of studies, including a large-scale U.S. Institute of Medicine review in 2004, that failed to uncover a link between childhood vaccines and autism. The first report of a possible connection appeared in British study in the late 1990s and has since been discredited.

Current estimates by the U.S. National Institutes of Health say that one American child in 150 has been diagnosed with autism, although experts wonder if that increase owes to better diagnoses and a broader definition of the disorder.

Still, at least one vaccine critic worries that inoculations are making children prone to autism, a developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, communication problems, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. And if it's not thimerosal, then it must be some other vaccine-related interaction, said Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder and president of the National Vaccine Information Center.

"There are many biological mechanisms involved in vaccine-induced brain and immune system changes that could quite well lead to autism," she said.

"Mercury doesn't belong in any product," Fisher added. "Mercury doesn't belong in vaccines whether it's proven or not proven that mercury is a problem in vaccines."

In ABC's new TV series Eli Stone, the premiere Thursday focuses on a lawyer arguing that a vaccine caused a child's autism. While the show includes statements that science has refuted a link between autism and vaccines, the program reinforces the connection as the jury awards the mother $5.2 million, according to the AAP.

"If parents watch this program and choose to deny their children immunizations, ABC will share in the responsibility for the suffering and deaths that occur as a result. The consequences of a decline in immunization rates could be devastating to the health of our nation's children," AAP President Dr. Renee R. Jenkins said in a prepared statement.

Mercury in Vaccines Leaves Blood Fast

Study Shows Ethyl Mercury in Thimerosal Leaves Blood Quickly

WebMD Medical News
January 30, 2008

by Daniel J. DeNoon

Ethyl mercury from the vaccine preservative thimerosal leaves the blood 10 times faster than methyl mercury, on which current risk assessments are based. Only trace levels of thimerosal can be found in U.S. vaccines, except in multi-dose vials of flu vaccine (single-dose flu vaccine has no thimerosal). But the inexpensive vaccines that allow poorer nations to afford to immunize their children still use thimerosal to prevent bacterial contamination.

Major studies of children who received thimerosal-preserved vaccines fail to find a link between these vaccines and health problems. But because thimerosal's active ingredient is a kind of mercury -- and because mercury can be highly toxic -- there is a belief among many parents of autistic children that thimerosal caused their children's disease.

Nearly everything known about the toxic effects of mercury is based on studies of a form of mercury called methyl mercury. That's the kind of mercury found in large ocean fish -- and the kind that causes developmental problems in children exposed to mercury through environmental disasters. But astonishingly little is known about the real risks of ethyl mercury itself.

A new study by University of Rochester researcher Michael E. Pichichero, MD, and colleagues now sheds some light on this mystery. Pichichero's team studied ethyl mercury levels in the blood, urine, and stools of Argentinean newborns and infants before and after they received multiple childhood immunizations with thimerosal-preserved vaccines.

"While our study is not a direct evaluation of neurological disorders and autism, it shows that mercury levels in infants' blood after vaccination with thimerosal-containing vaccines are 10 times lower -- and go away 10 times faster -- than if they'd received the same amount of methyl mercury," Pichichero tells WebMD.

One of the few researchers who studies the effects of ethyl mercury is Thomas Burbacher, PhD, professor of environmental and occupational health sciences and director of the infant primate research lab at the National Primate Research Center, University of Washington, Seattle. Burbacher's studies of ethyl mercury and thimerosal in primates are cited by both sides of the thimerosal debate.

Burbacher says that just because ethyl mercury is gone from an infant's blood soon after it receives a dose of thimerosal -- a half-life of just 3.7 days in the Pichichero study -- doesn't mean it's gone from the body.

"Just because it came out of the blood doesn't mean it is excreted from the body. It could have gone to the brain," Burbacher tells WebMD. "In primates, you actually get more mercury in the brain after exposure to ethyl mercury than with methyl mercury -- it has an easier time crossing the blood-brain barrier."

Pichichero agrees with Burbacher on this but he says the current findings are relevant to thimerosal risk.

"There is a direct relationship between the amount of mercury in the blood -- and how long it stays in the blood -- and the ability of mercury to get into the brain to produce developmental problems," he says. "We did not prove there was not deposition of mercury in other parts of the body, but we prove that the half-life of ethyl mercury from thimerosal is low, excretion is high, and the kidneys -- an organ very sensitive to the effects of mercury -- were not damaged."

Sallie Bernard is co-founder and executive director of SafeMinds, an organization that advocates "sensible action for ending mercury- induced neurological disorders."

Bernard says the Pichichero study is valuable because it makes it clear that the body handles ethyl mercury very differently from the way it handles methyl mercury.

"That is why we need real safety studies to look at the effects of ethyl mercury," Bernard tells WebMD. "We need not look at blood levels and excretion times, but at what goes on in the brain and what any ethyl mercury-induced changes in the brain are doing to children."

The Pichichero study appears in the February online edition of the journal Pediatrics.

People's comments on vaccines and autism

1. The absolute number of antibodies does not confer immunity; you could have a very high titre to a particular pathogen and still get the disease, or conversely, you can have no measurable antibodies and be immune. Memory cells, not levels of antibodies, mediate the immunity conferred by natural exposure/infection. Synthetic vaccinations are deemed to be "effective" based on antibody titres - that’s why vaccination is such a dangerous con and why vaccinated individuals still get those diseases.
As with so many areas of ‘modern medicine’ this is another theory designed around a profitable ‘treatment’, rather than honest, sound science.

2. Thank you for this link. I wish the information was available 22 years ago when vaccines were forced on us, without adequate warning of the risks and deception.
My firstborn son has been autistic since the DPT vaccination. It's tragic to wonder how his life would have been different without that tragic turn.

3. New study out of Harvard:
http://www.scipub.org/fulltext/ajbb/ajbb4273-84.pdf
Mercury levels in brains of those autopsied w/autism had 68.2% higher mercury levels. Though, it's a correlation the study says.
My child started having seizures after her 15 month MMR. Genetics are certainly involved, but the vaccines seemed to be the rug pulled out from under her.
They'd rather be politically correct than to at least ask questions. I don't care if they found mercury was not the cause of ASD, but you never shut the book on questions. That is not a true scientist.

4. I never heard of a vaccine without a harmful side effect.

5. I was about to say that the only vaccines I know of, without harmful side effects are the ones that are left in their boxes. But having pondered for several seconds, I imagine their has development has caused harmful side effects - "I exist (albeit in an unopened box), therefore I have"

6. This is an outstanding video!! I am happy to add yet another educated, very knowledgeable expert to my list on this issue. Most is not new news to me. But I am happy to forward this video to others! Thanks for the great video! Let's hope that many will take the time to watch and listen to this important information. Knowledge is power!

7. Keep fighting the fight. I will continue to be a mamabear when it comes to vaccines for my family. When my firstborn was an infant, I switched from a pediatrician to a family practictioner because I was tired of being berated and lectured for my belief that vaccines are worse for you than the disease. Dex I am so sorry about your son.

8. theres a tv show airing this thursday evening i believe it's on abc called "eli stone" thats a fictional story about a lawsuit filed on behalf of parents that have an austistic child and blame the vaccine for it..should be interesting...

9. Researchers this week identified two separate genetic defects linked to autism, one that directly causes the disorder in about 1% of cases and a second that may play a role in a much larger percentage of patients by increasing their susceptibility to environmental or other genetic influences.
1% is a genetically direct cause. The other genetic defect is INFLUENCIAL, either increasing their susceptibility to environmental (i.e., mercury) or other genetic influences. I saw no indication that it's "for the most part genetic". Perhaps you can provide us a link and a quote that claims this?

10. Also please look at what happens in the body after a vaccine is administered. Because the vaccines do not get filtered by the gut and then the liver they can wreck havoc all over the body (free floating formaldehyde, aluminium, etc).
The body's response causes a drastic lowering of vitamins, especially A. Another problem is when the sulfur-based detox pathway in the liver is compromised and mercury, aluminum, etc cannot be filtered out once they finally reach the liver.
There are a few doctors in America who have had success with treatments such as IV Vitamin A therapy.
Our children are exposed to so many toxins nowadays that vaccines typically are the straw that breaks the camel's back.

11. You probably never had a child of yours go from normal at 15 months to terrible regression after receiving the MMR. My son has ASD, and lost some of his hearing. ASD is NOT hereditary. I could go into all the details of watching him slip away after the MMR vaccine, but suffice it to say we finally found a good DAN doctor to treat him. He will recover, but I will never believe thimersol had nothing to do with his disorder. I fully believe there is an agenda to poison as many children with mercury laden vaccines as possible. This will create a generation of controllable slaves for the new world order. If that sounds too hard to believe, go check it out for yourself. By the way, many of the big pharma companies are the heirs of nazi eugenics experimentation data. Connect the dots.

U.S. Doctors Club ABC-TV Show on Autism & Vaccines

by Barbara Loe Fisher

I sighed with recognition when I learned that the leadership of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) had written a letter and issued a press release on Jan. 25 calling on ABC-TV to cancel tomorrow's premiere episode of a fictional drama about a family whose child regresses into autism after vaccination. On the same day, the American Medical Association (AMA) called on ABC to "mitigate the harm this episode may do" such as re-writing the script.

The CDC-funded Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) also piled on ABC-TV, urging doctors to put pressure on the network to cancel the broadcast while seven former directors of the CDC maintained in a Jan. 29 March of Dimes press release that "The implication that vaccinations cause autism is irresponsible and counter productive."

This latest coordinated attempt by physician leaders of America's medical establishment to muzzle the media's exploration of vaccine risk issues that have been making headlines for nearly three decades is reminiscent of the coordinated denials of vaccine risks by these same physician leaders in April 1982 when NBC-TV broadcast the documentary "DPT: Vaccine Roulette." It was a landmark documentary which earned television journalist Lea Thompson an Emmy and initiated a public dialogue that would change the course of medical history.

In 1982, when the NBC-TV documentary exposed the dangers of DPT vaccine, physician leaders in the AAP, AMA, CDC and other medical organizations joined together to discredit Thompson and everyone associated with the broadcast. An article in the July 1982 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) labeled the NBC-TV documentary "biased, histrionic and inaccurate" and even "amoral and psychopathic."

William Foege, M.D., then director of the CDC and one of the seven former CDC directors who endorsed the March of Dimes press release now criticizing ABC-TV for airing a fictional episode about vaccines and autism, in 1982 declared that the NBC- TV report about DPT vaccine risks was "an unbalanced view - bias, in my view, and inaccuracies to carry its destructive message.....not an example of responsible journalism."

In 1983, a year after the documentary aired, reporter Thompson explained "The AAP put out the word the day we did our story that the story was inaccurate and not to worry. When a reporter calls a local doctor or hospital or medical center, he speaks to doctors who have been told by the AAP and AMA not to worry. To my knowledge, pediatricians in this country have heard absolutely nothing from the AAP on DPT since then." (quoted in DPT: A Shot in the Dark)

Three years later, the U.S. Congress would acknowledge the reality of DPT and other vaccine brain injury and death by passing the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986. This societal acknowledgement was followed by the publishing, in 1991 and 1994, of four reports by the Institute of Medicine that DPT vaccine can cause brain inflammation and permanent brain damage and that other childhood vaccines can cause varying degrees of brain and immune system dysfunction, as well as death. In 1996, after parents of vaccine injured children had lobbied industry and government for 14 years, the FDA licensed a purified DTaP vaccine for babies.

To the credit of the owners and management of ABC-TV, the network has so far refused to cancel the premiere episode of Eli Stone that features a family struggling with issues familiar to parents whose children regress into autism after vaccination. Since 1982, Americans have depended on members of the Fourth Estate to illuminate for the public the scientific, medical, economic, political, social and ethical issues involved in the vaccine safety and informed consent debate. Hopefully, ABC-TV and all print and broadcast media outlets will hold the line against this latest threat to freedom of thought and expression by a medical community determined to silence people crying out for recognition and help for their vaccine injured children.

Parents deserve more from the pediatricians and doctors, who they entrust with their children's lives, than denials, hostility and disrespect. They deserve to have their questions about vaccination answered honestly; their concerns about vaccine risks taken seriously; and their children treated with the same compassion that doctors would treat their own children. They expect that, when their children regress after vaccination into poor health, pediatricians will leave no stone unturned, including exploring the possibility that vaccine(s) played a role in their child's development of autism, learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, intestinal bowel disorders and many other kinds of brain and immune system dysfunction.

Mothers and fathers expect that - whether or not mercury preservatives in vaccines have or have not been "proven" to be the cause of the autism epidemic - that pediatricians and all doctors would instinctively adhere to the "First do no harm" precautionary principle and support the immediate removal of a known neurotoxin from vaccines they inject into babies. Parents do not expect doctors to collectively stick their heads in the sand and turn away from their responsibility to find out why the biggest epidemic of chronic disease and disability among children in the history of our nation is associated with the more than doubling of the numbers of vaccines doctors give to them in the first few years of life.

In 1983, when pediatrician leaders of the AAP Redbook Committee met with co-founders of the National Vaccine Information Center to discuss DPT vaccine brain injuries, I begged them to take seriously the reports by parents that their children were regressing physically, mentally and emotionally after vaccination so that steps could be taken to minimize the risks. I warned them that "a system that will not bend will break."

In 2008, after 26 years of waiting for pediatricians to open their eyes and realize that leaders in the AAP, AMA, and CDC have betrayed their trust by denying the truth about vaccine risks, parents are taking matters into their own hands. If the mass vaccination system breaks, the blame can be put squarely at the feet of doctors who have waited too long to stand up and say "The lie stops here and now with me."

ABC said on Monday it would include a disclaimer about the plot line of the debut episode of the drama "Eli Stone," which links childhood vaccines to autism, and direct viewers to a government Web site that discredits such a link.

ABC's decision follows a call by the American Academy of Pediatrics for ABC to cancel the opening episode of "Eli Stone," which is scheduled to be broadcast at 10 p.m. Thursday.

In a letter to ABC executives on Friday, Dr. Renee R. Jenkins, the president of the pediatrics academy, warned that the episode "could lead to a tragic decline in immunization rates." The first episode portrays a lawyer who wins a case against a drug company on behalf of a mother who believes that a preservative in a vaccine caused her child's autism.

The link between a vaccine preservative called thimerosal and autism has been debated for much of the last decade, but many scientific studies have failed to show any causal link between the two. The letter from the pediatrics group followed an article in The New York Times last week highlighting the episode. Greg Berlanti, a co-creator and executive producer of the series, said that executives at neither ABC nor its ABC Studios production unit had any qualms about the episode, which he said he believed showed both sides of the argument.

Most public health organizations believe there is only one side, however. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the Institute of Medicine and the World Health Organization are among the organizations that have studied and rejected possible links between autism and the preservative in vaccines.

"Many people trust the health information presented on fictional television shows, which influences their decisions about health care," Dr. Jenkins wrote. Her letter said that beginning in 1998 in Britain, "erroneous reports linking the measles vaccine to autism prompted a decline in vaccination and the worst outbreak of measles in two decades, including the deaths of several children."

ABC will present a written notice and voice-over saying: "The following story is fictional and does not portray any actual persons, companies, products or events." A second card will direct viewers to the Center for Disease Control's autism Web site, www.cdc.gov/autism .
