A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Klenner attended St. Vincent and St. Francis College, where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology. He graduated �magna cum lauda� and was awarded a teaching fellowship there. He was also awarded the college medal �for scholastic philosophy. There followed another teaching fellowship in Chemistry at Catholic University, where he pursued studies for a doctorate in Physiology.
Dr. Klenner then �migrated� to North Carolina and Duke University to continue his studies. He arrived in time to use his knowledge in Physiology and Chemistry to free the nervous system of the frog for a symposium, by immersing the animal in 10% nitric acid. Taken in tow by Dr. Pearse, chairman of the department, he was finally persuaded to enter the school of medicine. He completed his studies at Duke University and received his medical degree in 1936.
Dr. Klenner served three years in post-graduate hospital training before embarking on a private practice in medicine. Although specializing in diseases of the chest, he continued to do General Practice because of the opportunities it afforded for observations in medicine. His patients were as enthusiastic as he in playing �guinea pigs� to study the action of ascorbic acid. The first massive doses of ascorbic acid he gave to himself. Each time something new appeared on the horizon, he took the same amount of ascorbic acid to study its effects so as to come up with the answers.
Dr. Klenner�s list of honours and professional affiliations is tremendous. He is listed in a flock of various �Who�s Who� registers. He has published many scientific papers throughout his scientific career.

I was meandering through the internet looking up various things. I knew Dr Fred Klenner and his entire family for many years through my parents, both of our families and as a patient. When I came across this blog , I found myself thrilled at the idea that I could finally speak to someone, anyone who would listen to what I thought of Dr Klenner personally and professionally.
As a child, I remember him sitting beside me on my bed at home with a thermometer stuck in my mouth. Once when making a house call with my sister, she requested that Dr Klenner read her a bed time story and he did so. I only knew of him as a brilliant man after I had grown, but I knew of him as a loving, endearing warm, and caring man as a child. I had often thought of him as a second Dad. Literally as physician he saved my life many times. When I was born in a small town in North Carolina where he practiced, he sent me to duke University Hospital where my life was saved with new medical treatments. When I was hit by a car as a child, he stayed right with me until I was well. As a young adult diagnosed with very painful arthritis, he treated me for a few months with mega doses of intramuscular vitamin shots, pills and therapy till my arthritis went into remission for many years. My Father who is now 92 is still up, about and going strong. He attributes it to vitamin c and vitamin e which originally was given to him by Dr Klenner and Pa was a pharmacist at the time. He still to this day takes vitamin c and e as well as many other folk in my family do.
Dr Klenner was far more than just a brilliant man, scientist and physician. He was a very caring and loving man.I feel honored to have had him as a father figure, and a loving friend. I am now almost 60 and he is gone for many years. But, he has been with me for years and will continue to do so in my heart.
